There are only 10 days left in January. The first month of the year is almost gone (how did this happen?) Usually, January feels like it's 157 days long, but this year, it FLEW by. What does that mean? It means February is almost here, which means another holiday to celebrate. Valentine's Day!
Last year I started a tradition where I cut out large hearts from construction paper and each day, I would put something I love about each of my kiddos and tape it to their bedroom door. I did the same for my husband and put them on the wall in front of his desk (he still has them up lol). However, as with most new good intentional habits, the chaos of life got in the way, and I would forget or get days behind and wouldn't quite make it to Valentine's Day.
This year, however, I'm ahead of the curve. I just ordered these simple but super cute Valetines from Amazon. They'll be delivered TOMORROW and I'm going to fill them in for each of my kiddos and husband before we even hit Feb 1. I ordered two sets because I'll have enough for each of DJ and Scarlett's classmates as well. (0.17 cents per card!!). Check them out by clicking the 'Perfect Valentines' link below!
I'll let my kiddos pick the little treat that goes with the card, but I feel so much better about having this box checked off, especially since I just checked my daughter's bookbag and we have a 100 day of school project to do this week. There's always something.
There's also one problem with there being only ten days left in the month, my husband and I have yet to have a date night. One of my additions to 2023 was going to be monthly date nights with my hubby. We tried to do this last year, but in January when we had our date planned, I got Covid. The next month, our date night was set, and my husband got sick. Then we found out he was deploying with only four weeks' notice, and everything just got shot to hell.
So, with only ten days left in the month, I realized we needed a date night idea and quick! I have been wanting to create a date night jar for a while. It took literally less than 4 minutes so I have 0 answers as to why I haven't done it before but, it's done now so that's what counts. I grabbed 12 popsicle sticks (one for each month) and just put random date night ideas on them. This way, each month, we grab one out and we don't have to think about it. Because planning a date night is kind of like picking something to watch on Netflix. You scan every option for two hours, then end up watching nothing. When it came to date nights, we would either go round and round about what we wanted to do and do nothing, or we'd ALWAYS go to dinner. Talk about boring.
The whole point is to spend time with my husband away from kids and just be us. So regardless of what we pick, the deal is we spend at least an hour, not including drive time to and from, doing this activity. I'm super excited. First up...
We are going on a hike! I promise, he's happier about this than he looks lol. This week, I'll take a look at hiking trails around and pick one that looks good and Saturday or Sunday, we'll head out on our date hike. I'm super excited about being more intentional about focusing on our marriage. It's so easy to get into our family routine which can so often lead to a rut. You spend time together, but it's not quality time, you're just sharing the same space. I also want our kids to grow up seeing how important it is to respect your relationships and marriage and that commitment takes effort.
And...lucky for us...it just so happens that Friday is our 11th anniversary. It's been one hell of a ride so far. I'm looking forward to seeing what our second decade together has in store. Our wedding day picture (justice of the peace for the win) and this past year's Christmas party.
